Make directory of LMS

Continuing the discussion from January 14, 2019:

Not really apropos of what @trashHeap was reporting, but e works in higher ed, so is likely to have some experience with various LMS, in a way that I am not. We may both disagree with how decisions get made, but I don’t know the considerations that go into choosing solutions for a larger school.

However, I do have a lot of experience, since every two years I spend a month installing all FOSS LMS I can, and judge them so hard.

This could take the form of two things:

  • A straight directory of items, with fields to sort, all that
  • A Wirecutter-style commentary doc, with our thinking

I have lots of thoughts on LMSes and that whole industry at large. You may want to narrow or define which kinds of things your out to acquire/document; before I contribute.

My actual experience with FLOSS LMS software is limited; ive sadly had to administer a proprietary one for a long time; and only really know of two floss one directly. (One of which I migrated our campus too).

Proprietary systems I am familiar with:

  • BlackBoard Learn
  • Desire2Learn/D2L/Brightspace

FLOSS systems I am familiar with:

  • Canvas
  • Moodle
