If a track is only on Soundcloud, what can be done?

I don’t have a Soundcloud account, they have nothing to offer me. But often some artist makes an interesting track and drops on there. I can’t youtube-dl the site without an account, but I’m wondering if it is even worth it: are all uploads to Soundcloud mp3?

If that is the case, then I think my next step would be to create a checklist to contact artists and try to obtain their audio directly.

This does not require an account for me. Docs imply it can use an account but it doesn’t seem to be required. I installed via pip.

I just learned about Funkwhale, a federated Soundcloud-like thing.

The way I found out about it was a friend on Secure Scuttlebutt posted about their abuse audit.
