Today, Tumblr’s owner, Verizon Media, announced that Automattic plans to acquire Tumblr. Automattic is the technology company behind products such as WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Simplenote—products that help connect creators, businesses, and publishers to communities around the world.

We couldn’t be more excited to be joining a team that has a similar mission. Many of you know WordPress.com, Automattic’s flagship product. WordPress.com and Tumblr were both early pioneers among blogging platforms.

I guess it’ll help blaghs hang around more?

For me Tumblr seemed to lead a wave that ended up centralizing blogging on proprietary platforms and undermining rss.

It would be interesting if they could invert that as the new owners.

Simplenote is kind of an overlooked gem in their portfolio that ive enjoyed in the past. Its electron but outside of that it’s quite a lot better than most products targeting that same space. And Im willing to trust automatic a bit more than say evernote.

I mostly self host note taking now. But if people wanted a cloud option I wish they would look at that one more often.

I would not use any Automattic product or service.

Perhaps I should revise that to “seems better than evernote at first glance.”

I honestly dont know a lot about automattic outside of what I know of wordpress. Any warmth I have is mostly from them shepherding FLOSS software and them not being a usual megacorp.
